What's your favourite thing about being a Newcastle artist?

Living in Newcastle upon Tyne I am spoilt for choice with an abundance of subject to work from, either working at the quayside and the iconic bridges or visiting the surrounding beautiful North East coastline and Northumberland for its spectacular rural scenes and countryside.

What's your favourite thing about being a Sheffield artist?

Adam Pearce - Sheffield artist
@apearce
I've lived in Sheffield all my life, but for a brief stint at uni, and I've always adored the great amount of greenery and the rolling hills of this place. the verticality of it means there's always something to look at, and the proud Yorkshire culture throughout feels vibrant and ambitious yet down to earth. It's always inspiring.

I love the community of Sheffield just as much as the hills and valleys, I love being able to get out of the city so easily to wonderful landscapes but still be in reach of the thriving cultural centre.

Without a shadow of doubt, it's the very fact that Sheffield people are proud of their city!

What's your favourite thing about being a Manchester artist?

Ashley Cundall - Manchester artist
The diversity of buildings, cultures and people which surround us all.
Amy Davies -

I’ve lived in Manchester for over 16 years and it was the busy buzz and distinct indie identity that first drew me to the city. I still love how there is something for everyone and how it constantly is evolving and reinventing itself, whilst remaining uniquely Mancunian. The city’s a great hub but it’s also so close to some spectacular landscapes, such as the Peak District, Cheshire plains and Pennines. So when the buzz of the city becomes a bit too much, within an hour you can find yourself in beautiful, breathtaking countryside.

I have lived in Manchester for over half my life now, it’s where my artistic journey began and where life really began for me. The city is friendly, vibrant and continuously evolving and it’s this changing urban environment that has been a source and inspiration of some of my work in the past. Joining Rogue Artists’ Studios 21 years ago was the best thing for me as an emerging artist in Manchester. They offered great affordable spaces and most importantly a thriving artist community. Being surrounded by fellow artists and friends for support is invaluable at all stages of your career.

What's your favourite thing about being a Leeds artist?

Kirsty Whyatt - Leeds artist
The inspiration is overwhelming, urban night scenes are on your doorstep, gritty inner city canals lit up with sodium glow contrasting with the neon lights wrapped around Bridgewater Place. The Atkinson Grimshaws in Leeds Art Gallery are a constant influence, as well as the BT box graffiti. All this, and to be surrounded by the Yorkshire Dales and Pennine Hills. As a painter you don't have to travel far for a life times work.

Sascha -
Leeds artist
Leeds is a city of both family cosiness and fresh-thinking independent businesses. It combines the best of city life and proximity to nature. Sascha LOVES her favourite spots amongst local makers and sellers (ie doughnuts, coffee, organic farmers). Leeds certainly offers a sense of community and personal fulfilment.
Charlotte Hall -
Leeds artist
I've been lucky enough to spend my childhood in the beautiful surroundings Leeds has to offer; with beauty spots such as Otley Chevin on our doorstep. The interesting shapes, unique textures and vivid pops of colour in nature have long inspired my work.

Christ Eastham -
Leeds artist
I’m very proud to be a native of Leeds and to have started my art career in the city centre at the wonderful, Leeds College of Art then known as ‘Jacob Kramer’ College. At the end of last year 2020 I was delighted to obtain a studio back in the heart of Leeds City Centre. This year I am hoping to collaborate on some work with my artistic neighbours at the fabulous ‘Northern ballet Company’

Inspiration

We asked our artists to share how their wonderful city inspires their art.

Manchester, particularly when thinking of it as Greater Manchester not just the city, is a vibrant area for the arts ranging from community and artist led endeavours to long running institutions with new graduates, established artist and emerging older artists all producing a wide range of interesting work. Manchester has always been a place of passion, forward thinking and revolt and this comes through in its art.

I started painting seriously again over 3 years ago. Since then my life has completely transformed for the better! I have met an amazing community of artists in Manchester who are incredibly supportive of one another. There are lots of arts oranisations such as Cotton on Manchester who are really inspiring and hold wonderful events and exhibitions to support local artist. My studio is amazing its in an old Victorian school with over 85 artists. The support I have had from the Manchester art scene has made me confident enough to give up my teaching job which I had for 18 years and become a full time artist!

Manchester is a vibrant, cultural and constantly changing city with lots of different artist communities. It is not difficult to be inspired by the ever changing urban landscape which is full of fabulous graffiti, layers of texture, lively and friendly people, and loads of theatres, cinema's, music venues and galleries so always somewhere to go.....

Manchester has such a vibe. It's cool, unique and cultured. It has an iconic vibrant style, variety and fantastic atmosphere which just lends itself to inspiration and creativity. The City is filled with amazing architecture, both modern and beautifully historic, amazing art galleries and The Northern Quarter for it's fantastic street art. These all provide great inspiration for my artwork. The people here are amazing too, with their immense pride for their City. They're friendly, welcoming and incredibly hard working. There is a great spirit and togetherness, people genuinely look after each other. It's a great City and I love living here.

Apart from living in York during my university years, I have lived in and around Manchester all my life. I’ve seen it grow and transform into the culturally rich, diverse, vibrant, exciting city it is today and I continue to love it.

The hustle and bustle. People moving around interacting with their environment. Cafés, bars, museums and galleries. I love just being surrounded by life in action, it recharges my creative batteries.
