I worked from a black and white photograph for this painting and used digital processes to suggest my own sepia colours creating an unreal atmosphere and a mood of longing. In my practice I like to navigate the forgotten alleys and shopfronts of bygone eras, aiming to resurrect their stories and evoke a sense of nostalgia for a disappearing heritage. Despite the luminosity of the scene, there is a weightiness that permeates the atmosphere, prompting reflection on the scars of history and the transformative potential of forgotten spaces. The empty chairs add an elemental trace of man, adding a poignant and melancholic feel.
